Yachtmaster Course Notes

MANDATORY DOCUMENTS TO COMPLETE AND BRING ON THE FIRST DAY OF YOUR COURSE

 

Thank you for booking your Yachtmaster training with Zephyr Yachting. 

It is extremely important that you read and take note of all of the following information. If any of this is unclear please contact the office for assistance.  

 

In preparation for your theory course, we ask you to please take the time before your course to work through our course notes and our How to Pass guide as well as the additional online courses we have signed you up for. This will ensure that you are prepared to get straight into the class on the first day!

 

Your theory knowledge is expected to be at the level of RYA Dayskipper Theory before starting the Yachtmaster offshore shorebased theory. We understand not everyone has the time or means to be able to complete this course prior to joining this course, therefore we have signed you onto the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Online Course in order to help you refamiliarise yourself with revise and prepare. You can find details on how to access this course below.

 

Pre-study will make a HUGE difference to your performance during the theory course and your RYA Yachtmaster exam.

Additional Recommended Supporting Books

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore shore based theory (coastal skipper)

Please ensure you come to your course prepared with the following items: 

Please have your Application form and Sea Time Summary filled out ready to present to your instructor on the first day of your course! 

  • Note pad
  • Pen/pencil/ pencil sharpener/ rubber
  • Portland plotter and Dividers (you should have received these in your essential navigation and seamanship skills course pack)
  • Calculator
  • Essential Navigation and seamanship skills course pack (including ALMANAC)
  • If you are completing your VHF exam with us please bring a passport photograph.
 

PRACTICAL PREPARATION FOLLOWED BY RYA YACHTMASTER EXAM

It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure you have all the prerequisites required to be entered for the RYA Yachtmaster Exam including the sea time necessary as you will be presenting it to the examiner. Your instructor can look over this for you during your theory or practical prep.

 As well as the items needed for the theory please bring the following:

  • Spray jacket for practical (or depending on the weather, ski jacket, warm cloths, socks and gloves as you will be exposed to the elements)
  • Sunscreen and hat for practical
  • RYA Exam Application Form filled
  • 1 passport photo for your Yachtmaster exam application
  • Your Yachtmaster Sea Time
  • A copy of your valid First Aid Certificate
  • A copy of your GMDSS compliant Marine Radio Short Range Certificate SRC or higher (If you booked a package this is included in the package but must be completed online before your theory course)

 

If you intend to commercially endorse your Yachtmaster certificate  

 

It is your responsibility to ensure you have all of the required paperwork prepared before your examination! Please feel free to come to the office during your course to make copies of your certificates.

If you do not already hold a GMDSS complaint Marine Radio Short Range Certificate SRC or higher. You will need to complete the RYA VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC). This is included in Zephyr Yachting’s complete Yachtmaster package.

The course is an interactive online course and will take around six hours, but the beauty of it is that you can work through it at your own speed, whenever and wherever you like.

Once you have completed this, please email us a copy of your certificate, your 1 hour VHF exam will be scheduled during your Yachtmaster Theory Course week.

To accompany your VHF course you will be given a VHF Ebook, you can either collect this with your other course material after booking or if you have chosen for us to DHL your course material we will include this in the package.

Once you have completed your online course please visit: https://www.rya.org.uk/exam-payments/Pages/hub.aspx

You will be able to pay your 70 GBP exam fee and download your application form.

PLEASE NOTE: You can not sit your VHF exam without this application form.  

We have signed you up to the essential navigation and seamanship skills online short course. It’s a highly informative course with lots of opportunities for you to practice your basic navigation in preparation for your Yachtmaster theory. You will find many interactive exercises to help reinforce the information and lots of chances to try out what you’ve learned.

Course topics include:

Charts and Publications, Safety, Engine checks, Buoyage, Tidal awareness, Visual and electronic navigation, Pilotage, Rules of the road, Anchoring, Weather forecasts, Passage planning. Online the course will take around six hours, but the beauty of it is that you can work through it at your own speed, whenever and wherever you like.

 

To accompany your course you will receive a course pack which includes a chart, plotter, dividers, course handbook, exercises. you can either collect this with your other course material after booking or if you have chosen for us to DHL your course material, we will include this in the package. 

Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) is a compulsory online course for new and revalidating applicants for RYA Commercial Endorsement to support a skipper’s Certificate of Competence. You do the course in your own time and can start as soon as you are registered.

All new applicants applying for Commercial Endorsement holding one of the certificates below are required to complete the online PPR course.

  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • RYA Advanced Powerboat
  • RYA Coastal Skipper (sail or Power)
  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Sail or Power)
  • RYA Yachtmaster Ocean (Sail or Power)

Candidates usually take between six and eight hours to work through the four-course modules of the PPR and exams.

 

Content:

  • Commercial environment – how you fit into the professional maritime world.
  • People – the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels.
  • Vessel – the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures.
  • Purpose – making sure your vessel is suitable and legal for the work you are carrying out, your obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.
  • Following the modules, there is a mock assessment so you can check you are ready before moving on to the final graded online assessment.
