The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System General Operator’s certificate is the highest certificate in radio communication and is a Certificate of Competence (CoC) in its own right as a ship-board radio operator’s licence. It is required for any personnel who have radio communication duties onboard vessels fitted with GMDSS equipment and is a qualification required for OOW.
The course covers three main areas:
- General knowledge of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and practical radio operations
- Regulations and procedures for situations such as emergencies and distress
- Practice and understanding of radio-telephone communications and equipment
You will learn general communications procedures, in particular distress, urgency, safety and routine communication, using VHF/MF/HF radio, telex and satellite systems.
Prerequisite:
Knowledge of the phonetic alphabet, computer literacy.
Duration:
8 days of training and 2 days for examinations
