RYA Yachtmaster Package
Course Information (theory & practical & exam)

This two week intensive package includes Yachtmaster Offshore Theory, Practical/Preparation, VHF & Exam fee. All these modules combined and successful completion of your exam qualifies candidates to captain vessels up to 24 metres, day & night, up to 150 miles from a safe haven.

During the first week of the Yachtmaster course the student will cover the theory aspect of the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Syllabus, This includes:

•The Magnetic Compass
•Tidal Streams
•GPS and Chart Plotters
•Echo Sounders
•Deck Log
•Rule of the Road
•Safety at Sea
•Navigation in Restricted Visibility
•Passage Planning
•Marine Environment

Towards the end of this first week, if the student does not hold the VHF SRC License this is included within the package, the course topics include:

•The basics of radio operation
•correct frequencies (channels) to be used
•Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
•Making ship to shore telephone calls
•Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
•Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
•Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
•Search and Rescue (SART)

At the start of the following week the student will then commence the RYA Yachtmaster offshore preparation; this is typically a four day course in preparation for the Yachtmaster Offshore Examination held at the end of the week. During the four days the Instructor will cover:

•International Regulations for Preventing Collisions At Sea
•Boat Handling
•General Seamanship, including maintenance
•Responsibilities of Skipper

Throughout the yachtmaster, the examiner will be inspecting the student in a captain's role, checking navigation skills, practical boat handling ability, international regulations and ability to organize your crew under different conditions that may be encountered; this includes day navigation as well as night.

Yachtmaster Course Requirements

Before sitting the theory level of this course the assumed level of knowledge is the Day Skipper Shore based course or having previously gained experience to this level.

To take the Practical examination, candidates must be aged 18 or over and require:

•Valid first aid certificate
•50 days at sea* 
•2,500 sea* miles including at least 5 passages over 60 miles acting as skipper for at least 2 of these passages and including 2 of which have involved overnight passages
•5 days experience as skipper
*Half the qualifying seatime must have been conducted in tidal waters e.g. outside the Med at least 1250 miles on vessel of less than 24 meters
